Education

Education is the most important element in terms of human resource. Therefore, the situation of education varies according to countries. Myanmar is rapidly changing its way since the end of military regime. In addition to government education system, there emerges a lot of new efforts outside school system to tackle many educational issues. In Japan, although it seems education system is quite stable, there are many issues at behind. In IDFC2019, we are going to grasp the present situation in both countries and visit places where such new efforts are being pursued. Through site-visit, we are going to consider what is really important in future education in Myanmar and Japan.

Ideal education is the system that children can learn based on their experiences, interaction with societies and realize how they can apply this concept in reality, not just memorizing and reciting. This is a system where teachers are also qualified, creative, innovative and competitive rather than being traditional and
conservative. Learning from experience would be an authentic and effective method instead of the rote-learning system. It is a system in which autonomous learning is encouraged and also focusing on independent researching.

What is the Ideal Education?

Introduction

The Problem of Current education both in Myanmar and Japan

Why is it important?

Since the children take an important role in their own countries’ future, education should be an
integral part of childhood. Education shapes not only human beings but also a better society. The
ideal education provides children with valuable experiences such as computing, visualized learning,
cultural exchanges and so forth. Indeed, these experiences help the children to attain the skills which
could be fundamental to survive in the current globalized world.

Myanmar

- Lack of facilities, the traditional method of education that is oriented for only memorizing

- Conservative and unqualified teachers and worst of all, lack of opportunities to access to the education for underprivileged children

Japan

-Uniform-oriented (with many strict rules to the students and not being given chance to to think critically or to be creative

The current implementation (site-visit) in Japan and Myanmar

COC, Japanese organization they offer opportunities for children with a real-based cross-cultural experience. In Myanmar, there is an innovative company such as 360ed providing new types of education (STEM education) that utilize technologies such as AR and VR to learn subjects like Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and English with more fun and also much affordable price. In addition, myME which help child labor at tea shops to have fundamental education by providing non-formal education with mobile classes. They try to enhance the skills to have a better future.

As for the limitation, they only provide non-formal education which is not certified by the government so that they cannot fully guarantee for children to have a better life once they finish their education.

New Values to Education of Japan and Myanmar

"Blooming education in the near future"

Introduction:

Education is the foundation of everything: whatever you do is based on education. In order to search in depth about this entity,we,Team F, had made a couple of objectives. During the last 10 days of IDFC camp, we visited the following educational organizations / schools both in Japan and Myanmar. The followings are what we learnt at those places as our “new values”.

CASACO is a place where children, local people and travelers from all over the world meet together. We site-visited this ‘wonder land’ on Day 3 and found a ‘sacred and new’ value. In Casaco, Japanese children can get an opportunity to interact with foreigners. Through learning different cultures and values from foreigners, Japanese children can get exposed to new and different ideas. Children also become to be confident and do not be afraid to be wrong.

At the same time, the foreigners can have a good time to interact with Japanese younglings.

MyME” is the organization, which offers children mobile education. Classroom is inside of its bus. The bus goes to places where children have difficulties in going to school within Yangon. They collect volunteers and train them to be teachers. They teach children English, Burmese, mathematics, life skills and so on. Non-formal education such as MyME works on reducing the number of out-of school children. We think it does not necessarily solve educational problems of whole Myanmar. That’s why youths like us should be willingly a part of such organizations and contribute to giving quality education to children in whole Myanmar.

WHAT IF we only need a phone to study our high school subjects but not from books? The answer only leads to only one place - 360’ed. 360’ed is a social enterprise which leverages virtual reality(VR) and augmented reality(AR) in transforming Myanmar’s national education. We made a site visit to this place on Day 6, and we were surprised by quite a lot of things : the lessons we learnt at high school come into “ALIVE” in a glance by AR.They produce toy boxes of STEM for different ages; AR mobile app for Grade 1’s English, Grade 11’s Biology,Chemistry and Physics and many other Tech-enhanced aids yet to be produced. In our opinion, THIS is a place where technology meets education; present meets future and “Future is in our hand”.

We visited an elementary school in Japan on our third day of IDFC camp.We saw so many differences that are surely ‘new values’ for  Myanmar students.Apart from just teaching and learning basic education, there we observed children enjoying their extra curricular activities, playing football, basketball, editing their own created videos at computer labs, singing nursery rhymes in guidance with teachers. One obvious point different from Myanmar is Japanese schools utilize child centered approach in teaching ensuring significantly interactive relationships between teachers and students.
